Leading by example, encouraging students to adopt a persevering attitude is essential for paving the way to a broader future. Since taking up teaching duties, Professor Hsiao has maintained excellent interaction and communication with students, adjusting his teaching methods and pace based on their immediate feedback, aiming to help each student continuously improve and enrich themselves.

The driving force for continuous learning lies in stimulating students’ curiosity.

Continuous learning is crucial not only for students but also for teachers. Students often introduce new knowledge and content in their reports, providing different ideas and perspectives. Professor Hsiao smiled and said, “Maintaining an open mind and gaining inspiration from students help enrich teaching materials and lesson plans continuously.” As the times change, teaching materials need to keep pace with the times. By staying updated and finding new cases, understanding current applications and development trends, and incorporating these trends into teaching materials, students can see how their knowledge can be applied in reality.

Additionally, guiding students to stimulate their curiosity and learn to find new applications and cases in life can help them better understand and apply knowledge. The key to continuous learning lies in constantly seeking new application cases and trends, integrating them into teaching, and inspiring students’ curiosity and spirit of exploration. Through these methods, enthusiasm for learning is maintained, and the latest knowledge and abilities are imparted to students.

There is no fixed method in teaching, only continuous adjustment.

To ensure students achieve a certain level of learning effectiveness, Professor Hsiao provides self-made learning handouts before class, allowing students to record key points and class content more quickly, enhancing their focus in class and improving learning impressions. However, during the teaching process, it was found that for courses related to mathematics and programming, where students need to focus on listening and understanding, taking notes simultaneously resulted in poorer learning outcomes. This discovery motivated Professor Hsiao to explore teaching methods further!

Choosing appropriate teaching methods based on feedback and the characteristics of different courses is crucial. This teaching flexibility enables Professor Hsiao to better respond to students’ needs, ensuring that students can focus more on learning and improve learning effectiveness in class. Encouraging students to actively ask questions in class not only helps them understand the course but also allows for timely interaction and feedback, continuously adjusting during the teaching process to ensure maximum learning effectiveness.

Final reports are conducted in a manner that combines theory with practice, helping students delve deeper into their studies and apply theory to real-world situations. However, challenges may arise when facing practical applications, such as the need to search for existing products on the market and improve them using human factors engineering methods, requiring a deep understanding of the product and identifying areas for improvement. Students may feel confused about the feasibility of their chosen topics, and Professor Hsiao provides timely suggestions, indicating whether similar reports exist or suggesting a change in approach.

To understand students’ participation in class, apart from guiding them through the stages of completing the final report, time is allocated for discussion and planning, ensuring progress at each stage and resolving potential issues promptly. Combining theory with practice in teaching has a positive and significant impact on students’ learning effectiveness. Through appropriate guidance and stage-by-stage assistance, Professor Hsiao helps students overcome difficulties, achieve better learning outcomes, and cultivate their practical application abilities.

Students’ success is the true success of a teacher.

Regardless of whether they choose further education or employment in the future, students often feel lost and helpless, and understanding one’s own professional knowledge and skills is crucial. Professor Hsiao periodically shares experiences with graduating students, emphasizing the importance of applying what they have learned. “It’s important to learn and apply, but even more important is learning how to apply!” Finding a direction of interest and investing more time in learning, integrating what they have learned, and applying it, this innovative thinking and cross-disciplinary integration abilities will set them apart in specific fields and open up new futures for themselves.

Encouraging students not only to maintain a persevering attitude but also to fully utilize their acquired knowledge, self-improvement, and contribute to society is what Professor Hsiao hopes for and is most pleased about. He firmly believes that “Students’ success is the true success of a teacher!” and encourages himself to continue learning and improving on the teaching journey.

以身作則,鼓勵學生秉持堅持不放棄的態度,才能為自己開創出更寬闊的未來。蕭育霖老師自任教以來,與學生保持良好的互動與溝通,透過學生即時的反饋,進而調整上課的方式與步調,期盼讓每位學生都能不斷的精進與充實自我。

持續學習的動力 在於激發學生好奇心

持續學習不僅對學生很重要,對老師來說更是如此。學生在報告中會提到新的知識與內容,可以藉此得到不同想法和觀點。育霖老師笑著說:「保持開放的心態,從學生身上獲得靈感,這有助於持續豐富教材和教案。」時代不斷的在變化,而教材也需要與時俱進,保持資訊更新並尋找新的案例,了解當前的應用和發展趨勢,並將這些新趨勢融入教材中,讓學生看到所學的知識如何在現實中加以應用。

同時,引導學生激發好奇心,從生活中學習尋找新的應用和案例,如此將能夠更容易理解和應用知識。持續學習的關鍵,在於不斷地尋找新的應用案例和趨勢,將其融入到教學中,同時啟發學生好奇心和主動探索的精神。通過這些方法保持對學習的熱情,並將最新的知識和能力傳授給學生。

教學沒有必然的方法  只有持續不斷的調整

為了讓學生獲得一定的學習成效,育霖老師在課前會提供自製的學習講義,使學生能更快速記錄重點及上課內容,用以加強上課專注力及提升學習印象。但在教學過程中發現,對於偏向數學和程式語言相關的課程,因為需要專注聆聽與理解,學生同時筆記反而學習成果較差。而這也激發育霖老師探索教學方法的動力!

根據學習間反饋和不同課程的特點,選擇合適的教學方法是至關重要的。這種教學靈活性,使育霖老師能更好地回應學生的需求,確保在課堂中學生可以更專注的學習、提高學習效果。鼓勵學生踴躍在課堂中提問,不僅有助於學生對課程的理解,並透過適時的互動和反饋,在教學過程中不斷地調整,以確保學習成效得到最大的提升。

期末報告以結合理論與實務的方式進行,幫助學生更深入地學習,並將理論應用於實際情境。然而,在面臨實際應用時可能會遭遇挑戰,例如:需要尋找市場上現有產品,並應用人因工程的方法進行改良,這就需要深入了解產品並找出改進之處。學生可能會對所選題目的可行性感到困惑,育霖老師會適時提供建議,指出是否已有相似報告或是轉換思路。

為能了解學生在課堂的參與度,除了分階段指導學生完成期末報告的進度外,也會給予時間去討論與規劃,確保在每個階段都有所進展,同時也能即時解決可能出現的問題。教學中結合理論與實務,對於學生的學習成效具有積極且正面的影響。透過適當指導和階段性協助,育霖老師幫助學生克服困難,實現更好的學習效果,同時培養學生在實際應用中的能力。

學生成功 是老師真正成功之處

對於未來無論是選擇升學或就業,學生總是容易感到徬徨無助,先了解自身的專業知識和技能更是關鍵。育霖老師不定期會與畢業學生分享彼此近況,「學以致用很重要,但更重要的是學習如何去運用!」找到自己有興趣的方向,並且投入更多的時間去學習,將所學結合起來加以應用,這種創新思維和跨界整合的能力會在特定領域中脫穎而出,並能為自己開闢新的未來。

不僅僅是鼓勵學生秉持堅持不放棄的態度,能充分運用所學知識,自我提升進而貢獻社會,是育霖老師最期盼也最高興的事。並以「學生成功,是老師真正成功之處!」勉勵自己繼續在教學路上學習與精進。
